Acne is presence of blackheads or whiteheads on the skin. It mostly occurs in the young people. It is not one of the very rare and severe diseases but it is an embarrassing one. Young people mostly care about their looks and acne will destroy their looks. So acne is among the diseases which are treated soon after appearance of their symptoms. Women need to be more careful about acne because hormones causing acne are associated with menstruation. Acne vulgaris rarely occurs in old age. Acne rosacea occurs in old age and has similar appearances.

Although acne is partly hereditary disease but its genetic cause is unknown. Acne does not spread by contact and it is not infectious. Acne may occur due to following factors.• Genetic or family history. Families are vulnerable to acne and it is so because of genetic disorder. Genetic acne is characterized by the presence of retentional acne lesions and it occurs in the early age.• Hormonal disorder or activity may also lead to acne. Menstrual cycles and puberty may also result in acne. In puberty, growth of follicular glands increases the production of sebum. This increase in sebum causes acne.• Scratching of skin or any other kind of skin irritation can also cause acne and inflammation.• Modern studies have shown that stress can be cause of acne. Increased acne severity can be linked with increased stress levels. Stress actually is acne flare.• Hyperactivity of the sebaceous gland will also cause acne.• Microorganisms like bacteria can also cause acne. Anaerobic bacterium ‘propionibactterium acnes’ is present in the pores and is cause of the acne. Resistance against common antibiotics is increasing day by day.• Anabolic steroids can also cause acne.• Acne can be triggered in lack of estradiol• Certain chemicals like chloracane are also responsible for acne occurrence.• Testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dehydroepianndrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and well as insulin like growth factor are also linked with acne.. Imbalance of diet is also an important factor of acne. Chocolate was thought to be reason of acne occurrence but recent studies have proven that chocolate is low glycemic food and it do not cause or trigger acne. Skimmed milk, cottage cheese and cream cheese may also cause acne. Reason is hormonal imbalance associated with these food products. Hyperglycemic food like soft drinks, sweets and white bread can increase blood glucose that will result in increased secretion of IGF-1 and finally cause acne.

Absence of acne is linked with low glycemic food. Non-Westernized societies may develop acne at very low rate because of their cultural diet which contains low glycemic index. Studies have shown that acne patients have low vitamin A level. Severe acne patients have low vitamin A as well as low vitamin E levels in blood.

There is a common misconception that acne arises from dust. Dust has nothing to do with acne. Blackheads appear like dust accumulation in the pores and this has created misconception that acne is caused by dust.
